Lovehoney challenges censorship – Retail Ad of the Week April 19th

This week, sex toy and lingerie site Lovehoney has unveiled its latest out-of-home campaign, ‘Not a Sex Toy’, spotlighting the everyday household objects that people in the UK turn to for sexual pleasure.

Lovehoney has dubbed the billboards as the “Unbannable Ads” – Lovehoney has to be careful what it shows in its public-facing adverts because advertising guidelines restrict ‘explicit content’. Because of the potential problems using their products, Lovehoney has got creative with the items they’ve used in the ads. Rather than actual sex toys, the brand has chosen to feature items such as toothbrushes, pillows, and cucumbers – with tongue-in-cheek copy telling the public ‘You deserve better’.

The products used in the adverts have been chosen via Lovehoney’s research into what the public use if they don’t have access to sex toys. Their research found that 41% of adults are using everyday objects in place of sex toys including pillows, toothbrushes, socks and many other household items.

Lovehoney’s Sex & Sexual Health Expert, Sarah Mulindwa said:

“We’re all about creativity in the bedroom, but it’s important to keep it safe: using regular household objects that aren’t designed for bodies can be risky. Using items like hairbrushes, mobile phones, and pillows to satisfy your sexual needs could lead to injuries, infections or other problems. If you are going to try out a homemade sex toy, it’s important to read up on how to do it safely – but I’d always advise opting for a purpose made sex toy, as you know it’s made out of safe materials and crafted specifically for use in the bedroom.”
