Asda expands into wholesale convenience with independent retailer trial

Asda has unveiled a new wholesale venture, “Asda Convenience,” partnering with independent store operators to expand its presence across local high streets.

The supermarket giant is launching a three-store pilot in Glasgow in collaboration with Scottish independent operator One-O-One. Under the trial, the shops will operate under the new Asda Convenience fascia, stocking roughly 3,500 products including fresh and chilled groceries, food-to-go, and Asda own-brand lines at value price points.

The move establishes a dedicated wholesale arm distinct from the supermarket’s wholly owned Asda Express convenience chain. If the Scottish pilot proves successful, Asda aims to rapidly scale the wholesale model across the rest of the UK.

Joseph Sutton, Asda’s Express, Fuel & Wholesale Director, described the initiative as a key step in expanding the grocer’s footprint.

“By partnering with experienced independent retailers, we can combine our product range, pricing, and supply chain strengths with their local expertise to create a truly compelling offer,” Sutton said. “This is just the beginning, and we see a real opportunity to scale this approach while building a broader wholesale business.”

For One-O-One, which operates stores throughout Scotland’s Central Belt, the partnership allows the business to tap into Asda’s national supply chain while maintaining its local footprint.

“With a long-established presence in communities throughout the Central Belt, we’ve built trusted local stores that understand the individual needs of the neighbourhoods they serve,” said Paul Stirling, Group Retail Director at One-O-One. “Combining that local knowledge with Asda’s exceptional value, market-leading own-brand range, and strong customer proposition creates a compelling convenience offer.”

The trial will test logistics and commercial viability before Asda begins courting additional independent retailers nationwide.
